Understanding Charcot foot

Charcot foot can affect the bones and joints when protective sensation is reduced. A warm or swollen foot can have several causes; an in-person assessment is needed.
Management may involve immobilisation and offloading, monitoring and, in selected cases, surgical assessment. The clinician will discuss suitable options.

Questions before your visit
Do I need an ulcer to attend?
No. A foot-risk assessment can help identify care needs before an ulcer develops, particularly when sensation is reduced or there has been a previous ulcer.
Will every patient need surgery?
No. Recommendations depend on the clinical assessment. The team will discuss offloading, wound care, medical treatment or surgical evaluation as appropriate.
Can an assessment guarantee limb preservation?
No. The aim is to protect the foot and preserve function where clinically possible. Outcomes depend on factors such as infection, circulation, tissue damage and overall health.
Can I send a photograph instead of attending?
A photograph cannot replace examination of sensation, circulation, infection or stability. Ask the care team to arrange an appropriate in-person assessment. Do not delay urgent care while messaging.
